Sandwich, Massachusetts 1825-1888
"Sandwich
Glass" has become a generic term to collectors for early glass made at many
different factories, not only in New England, but in the Midwest as well. Many
of the patterns designated as Sandwich products were copied by other factories
using virtually identical molds. Deming Jarves founded the Boston and Sandwich
Glass Company in 1825 and continued until 1888 when it was bought by Libbey
Glass of Toledo, Ohio. Many types of glass were produced at the Sandwich
factory, including blown, molded, cut, press and engraved. Jarves greatest
contribution to the field of glassmaking was his improvement in the pressed
glass technique. He developed machinery to press glass in 1827. The first items
were glass knobs for furniture and toys. The Baccarat factory in France was
developing a similar method a few years later. American and French design
details are different which becomes apparent after studying both kinds of glass.
